Stage 13. Sligo – Athlone

In this stage we began our coming back to Dublin, leaving the Irish West Coast and crossing the country through the hinterland to stay at night in Athlone. We visited Sligo and Boyle Abbeys and tried to find Drumanone Dolmen (without any success), we reached Roscommon Castle and finally found La Tène stone.

Stage 12. Sligo surroundings

The surroundings of Sligo showed us Carrowmore megalithic cemetery and the route around Gill Lake took us to Parke Castle and Creevelea Abbey. In the road to the North we found a big curious Celtic cross in Drumcliff and another prehistoric tomb, in Creevykeel.

Stage 11. Westport – Sligo

The day trip between Westport and Sligo was long (more than 200 kms) but it was really fructiferous, because we visited many places. We were at Burrishoole Abbey, which is by a little lake where we saw an otter. Later we visited Rockfleet Castle, the cliffs of Mallaranny, where part of the Invincible Armada sank, the megalithic cemetery of Céide Fields, an Ogham stone near Killala and Rosserk Priory.
